10 Oct 2005  Just a little update.  We're currently in Asanvari, Maewo, Vanuatu after a cruise through Epi Island, Maskelyne, Malakula, Ambrym, and Pentacost.  These are all short hops and nice day sails.  We've caught fish, checked out unreal primitive dances and villages.  Did some trading of unwanted items on the boat for carvings and crafts and met some super people.  Asanvari has a little "Yacht Club" (if you could call it that) and a cool waterfall of fresh water at the anchorage for swimming, showers, and laundry.  Here's a few of our favorite words/phrases in Bislama (the national language).  Swim fins= fits blong duk duk !!   Condom= rubba blong fak fak !!  Hammer= killum stik !!  Ha  R&K
1 Oct 2005   Sailed from Havannah Harbour, Efate Island Vanuatu to Lemen Bay, Epi Island yesterday.  A super fast passage with 15-20 knots about 20deg behind the beam.  Averaged over 7 knots the whole way and had a double strike which landed 2 walu (mackerel).  Had a pot luck with 3 other boats.  Today went over to Lamen Island by dinghy and had a look round the 2 villages with a guy called Douglas.  He told us how the island became populated by 2 women who lived on nearby Malekula and wanted to get away. They lived alone for sometime until a leper was cast off another island on a raft made of coconuts (which he ate as he drifted downwind) finally landing on Lemen with sores healed by the salt water(called solwata here)!!!  The three of them then populated the island.  Saw a dugong which is a sea cow (mammal) and looks like a cross between a seal and a hippo with a whale's tail!  Water is super warm for snorkeling and tons of huge turtles.  Weather has finally settled into a grove
15 Sept 2005  Arrived Port Vila 7:00 am local time and picked up a mooring.  After a nap, we're headed to Customs and to check out the town.  Some of our old buddies are here and the restaurants are reported to be great.  More later..Caw! R&K
14 Sept 2005 On da move again!  After 6 awesome days in Tanna we're Port Vila bound. The Yasur volcano was definitely the highlight of the island, but must mention the villages and smiley people.  Position at 02:30 pm local time is 19 deg 07 min S, 169 deg 10 min E.  Doing 6 knots with jib and double reefed main.  Had some really lumpy seas earlier, but smoothing out a bit now.  We intend to arrive Vila just after dawn tomorrow.  Three other boats all within sight as we all left Port Resolution this morning.  "Ascension" and "Endless" from Canada and  "Freefall" Ireland/Germany.  Caw!
8 Sept 2005   Bull Mahi Mahi!!!  Received a great welcome to Vanuatu about 2 hours before arriving here at Port Resolution.  Da buggah must weigh at least 40 lbs!  We've already been sharing it with locals and other cruiser friends.  Arrived about 3:30 pm local time and saw the volcano spewing smoke on our approach.  We've lined up the 2 hour truck ride across the island for tomorrow am to check in and hit the weekly market for veggies.  Looks like a fun place so far.  All the best to all of you.   R&K
7 Sept 2005  Au revoir a Nouvelle Caledonie!  We're Tanna bound.  Left Baie de Santal about 11 am local time and rounded Lifou island to the north.  On course for Port Resolution to check into Vanuatu.  170 miles total and as of 4pm local time, 137 miles to go.  Should arrive late afternoon tomorrow.  We'll be taking a truck ride across the island of Tanna to check in with officials and also checking out the wild Yasur volcano while we're there.  Wind forward of the beam on close reach.  Seas kinds lumpy and skies cloudy with some scattered showers.  20 deg 34 min S, 167 deg 18 min E.  Caw!
5 Sept 2005  Bonjour...update...We sailed overnight to arrive here at Lifou Island in the Loyalty Group.  They are part of New Caledonia and we spent a month there exploring Grand Terre and Ile des Pines.  Very cool weather as it is further south, but beautiful and the baguettes were awesome!  We'll hang around these islands for a few days and then its off to Tanna, Vanuatu within the week.  Haven't been able to get the Fiji stuff on the site for this season yet, but it will be forthcoming.  Caw!  R&K
Update 1st Aug 2005  Funny how the passage washes away in ones memory whilst sitting in an idyllic anchorage after the fact.  Kinda like child birth...lets you do it again and forget the pain!  The passe was a piece of cake, due to wise planning we must add, and sitting in a pine tree silhouetted bay we are happy to have arrived in Nouvelle Caledonie! Tomorrow is check in and meet up with our lifelong buddy, Clay.  Safe and Sound  R&K
1 Aug 2005 Sega na Lega (no problem) making it today.  At 00:00 UTC, we've only got 28 miles to go to the passe.  This will put us ahead of slack high water, but the current will be going with the wind and will be in its last hour or so of flood so we probably won't notice any overfalls or standing waves of any kind.  Looking forward to a nice sleep tonight so we'll be fresh for our sail around the southern end of the island to clear customs in Noumea.  Clay is there waiting~we got an email from him.  Yet another chapter of the saga of Amazing Grace.  R&K
