Maupiti

We only stayed on the island of Maupiti for 5 days but found it to be charming and friendly. About 27 miles from Bora Bora, Maupiti is the most rural of all the Society Islands with a circumference of only 10km (6 miles). Having been less influenced by the French, the people there seemed to have retained more of their Polynesian life-style and are friendlier than on the other islands.  As soon as we were anchored we were greeted with a local paddling canoe race and the people in the committee boats waved with friendly smiles as they passed our boat.  It took us 1 hour to ride our bikes around this island to discover it’s towering, shear peaks and beautiful white-sand beaches. We visited a very nice Frenchman who ran a Pension (bed&breakfast) on one of the long Motus. He told us where to find the trail that leads straight up to the towering cliff that overlooks the little village. After climbing up we were awestruck by the breathtaking view of the lagoon from many angles.  The next day we pulled anchor and set sail for Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. 511 miles away and 5 days of down wind sailing.
